Red Dog and Black Dog
Red Dog & Black Dog's Blog
Until February of 2012, the only children that my husband and myself have are Red Dog (a four-year-old, female golden retriever) and Black Dog (a two-year-old, female golden retriever / labrador retriever mix).
Red Dog is our oldest child, and we went about getting her all the wrong ways, but at the time we didn't know any better. I answered a newspaper ad in a Sunday paper a week and a half before Christmas, and we bought her in the parking lot of the local K-Mart. The husband and I call her our "Blue Light Special," and honestly say that she's the best thing that either of us has even gotten at K-Mart. That said, we now know the importance of looking for respectable dog breeders or rescuing, which is how we got Black Dog.
Black Dog is our baby (at least for a few more weeks). I found her ad on Petfinder.com when she was 10-12 weeks old, and husband and I drove up to a Kansas City suburb to adopt her. She had been a pup being sold or given away at a local Walmart parking lot, but along with a chocolate colored, more lab-like sister was dumped on the side of the road when no one wanted them. I can't imagine anyone just dumping this sweetheart. It really was our gain, because she is the sweetest dog we've ever known, and Red Dog isn't known for not being sweet.
They're my girls, and I spend my days with them now. I call them my Heart and Soul, though I there's no distinguishing between the two. I wouldn't know what to do without them. Having them and bringing in a baby will be interesting, but I honestly can't wait to see them eventually devote themselves to their baby girl.
